Microsoft's Request for AI Chatbot Competitors to Refrain from Using Bing Search Data

Microsoft's request for AI chatbot competitors to refrain from using Bing search data has sparked interest in the tech industry. Bloomberg reported that Microsoft has asked two search engines, which have not been named but are supported by Bing, to restrict access to Microsoft search data completely if they continue to use their AI tools. Microsoft reportedly licenses Bing search data to some search engines, including DuckDuckGo, Yahoo, and AI search engine You.com.

DuckDuckGo combines Bing with its own web crawler to provide search results, while You.com and Neeva also use Bing to help save time and resources involved in crawling the entire web. Microsoft has drawn a line in the use of its Bing search index as a feed for its AI chatbot. A source familiar with the situation told Bloomberg that Microsoft believed using Bing data in this way was a breach of contract and could choose to terminate its agreement with the search engine that is accused of misusing the information.

Microsoft has also contacted partners who have not complied with the agreement and stated that they consistently enforce its terms thoroughly. However, it is unknown if Microsoft has taken any action against the search engine platforms mentioned in the report.

With the rise of AI chatbots on Bing and the increasing number of competitors, Microsoft could potentially make search results on its platform exclusive. Microsoft released its own AI chatbot on Bing a while ago, which reportedly uses OpenAI's GPT-4, a more advanced language model than ChatGPT's GPT-3.5.

Microsoft Corporate VP and Consumer Chief Marketing Officer Yusuf Mehdi said in a blog post that if users want to try GPT-4, they can sign up for the latest Bing preview. Once logged in, the Bing chatbot can be used for search, answering questions, and chatting on Bing.com.

This move by Microsoft to limit the use of its Bing search data by its AI chatbot competitors could be seen as an attempt to gain a competitive advantage. However, it remains to be seen how this will play out in the tech industry and if other search engines will comply with Microsoft's request. Nonetheless, Microsoft's AI developments and its use of OpenAI's GPT-4 signal exciting times ahead for AI and natural language processing.
