Manchester United's plan to sign the next Wayne Rooney may have hit a snag as Brighton and Hove Albion's young striker, Evan Ferguson, has reportedly turned down a summer transfer to Old Trafford in 2023.
The 18-year-old Ferguson has been one of the brightest young talents in the 2022/2023 Premier League season. He has scored seven goals and provided three assists in 16 appearances across all competitions for Brighton.
Ferguson's impressive form for his club has also translated to his national team, with the youngster recently scoring his first senior goal for the Republic of Ireland in a 3-2 win over Latvia in a friendly match last week.
Given his immense potential, many clubs have expressed interest in signing Ferguson. However, the young striker only recently signed his first professional contract with Brighton upon turning 18 and is contracted until 2026.
One of the clubs keen on Ferguson is Manchester United, who see him as the potential heir to Wayne Rooney's legacy at Old Trafford. The Red Devils have reportedly offered Ferguson a lucrative deal and the chance to play in the Champions League, but according to The Suns, the youngster has turned down their advances.
Ferguson is not ready to move to a bigger club just yet, choosing instead to continue his development with Roberto De Zerbi's Brighton. He feels that he still has a lot to learn and grow as a player, and the best place for him right now is with the Seagulls.
Manchester United are in need of at least two strikers in the summer of 2023, with manager Erik ten Hag looking to sign one experienced and expensive striker, as well as a young prospect. The Red Devils plan to release Anthony Martial due to his recurring injuries and Wout Weghorst's loan deal will also expire in June 2023.
Although Ferguson has turned down Manchester United's offer for now, his potential and talent will continue to attract interest from top clubs around the world, and it remains to be seen where his career will take him in the future.
