Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has reportedly rejected a new contract offer from the club. The Spanish goalkeeper was not ready to accept a significant reduction in his current salary.
The 31-year-old is currently the highest-paid player at the club with a weekly wage of £375,000. However, the agreement will expire at the end of June, and there is speculation about his future at Old Trafford.
De Gea has expressed his desire to stay at Manchester United on several occasions. The club is believed to be interested in retaining him, although recent talks suggest that a new number one player may be signed this summer.
The Spanish goalkeeper has been an important player for the Red Devils this season. He has made 42 appearances in all competitions, recording 18 clean sheets.
De Gea has produced a number of impressive performances in recent weeks, although his distribution from the back continues to be criticized.
According to The Athletic, Manchester United wants to significantly reduce the player's salary. And reportedly, the stopper was willing to lower his wages to sign a new contract.
However, the report claims that the latest contract offer has been rejected. De Gea believes that he deserves to be one of the highest-paid players at the club.
Manchester United is expected to come back with a new proposal, and if the goalkeeper is keen to sign a new contract, a positive conclusion is likely.
De Gea moved to Old Trafford from Atletico Madrid in July 2011, and he has now represented the 20-time English champions in 529 appearances in all competitions.
